Radial shaft seals

A radial shaft seal is a lip seal mounted on a rotating shaft to keep lubricant in and prevent the ingress of dust, water and particles. It is used in gearboxes, reducers, pumps, electric motors, drive shafts and process equipment. It works together with the bearing: if the lip loses contact or the elastomer hardens, lubricant is lost, contaminant enters, and bearing failure comes sooner.

It is identified by three dimensions: the shaft diameter (d), the bore diameter (D) and the width (h), always in that order. Seal catalogs use numeric codes specific to each brand, such as 1001Pol, 1005 and 1007/85 in DBH, or 28758, 32470 and 1033228/E in SKF. That number does not describe the size by itself: it is cross-referenced with the brand's table, so it is best to provide the complete code, including the slash and final letter when present.

To choose a seal, the dimensions are not enough. The type of lubricant, shaft peripheral speed, temperature and pressure matter, because they determine the lip material (for example NBR or FKM) and whether it has a single lip, double lip against dust, or metal case. The shaft condition also counts: if it has a wear groove in the contact area, a wear sleeve is evaluated or the lip is shifted with a seal of another width.
