The DBH 8898 oil seal is a single-lip radial seal designed to close off the passage of oil or grease at the point where a shaft rotates inside a housing. Its function is to retain the lubricant on the inner side and stop the entry of dust, water or particles that accelerate wear. It is press-fitted into covers, gearboxes, pumps and motors, and runs on the shaft with slight interference that guarantees lip contact.

This seal is identified by its designation 8898 and by the dimensions that define it: shaft diameter of 38 mm, housing diameter of 60 mm and height of 8.00 mm. The Lx design corresponds to a single sealing lip with an outer metal body, the most widespread variant for rotating shafts with permanent lubrication. Those three dimensions are the ones to respect when replacing it: any difference in housing diameter changes the fit and compromises sealing.

In practice, this type of seal appears in gearboxes, gearmotors, centrifugal pumps, compressors, fan shafts and power transmission equipment. To select it properly, check that the shaft has no burrs, splines or wear in the contact area: a new lip on a scored track will not seal. The housing must be clean, with no remains of the previous seal, and it is advisable to lubricate the lip before mounting so that it does not run dry at start-up. The 8.00 mm height must match the seat; if the housing is deeper, the seal may be displaced and lose concentricity.
