SKF Y-bearing units are assembled units: a cast iron or pressed steel housing with an insert bearing already fitted. They are bolted to the structure, the shaft is passed through and the insert is locked. The catalog includes SKF's own series, such as SY and FY, alongside the UCP and UCF series. The part number describes the housing shape and the size; the insert inside is identified separately.

The first letters tell you how the unit is fixed. SY 1.1/2 TF is a pillow block and FY 1.1/2 TF is a square flange, both for the same shaft. In these series the number is the shaft diameter: with a point and a fraction when it is in inches, as in both examples, and a whole number when it is in millimetres, as in SY 25 TF. The final block of letters refers to the insert fitted in the unit and must be copied.
In UCP 205 and UCF 205 the logic changes: P and F are again pillow block and flange, but 205 is a series size, not a direct shaft dimension. That is why comparing numbers between one family and another is not enough. If the part number also carries a slash and letters at the end, it is a variant of the same unit and is part of the reference.
In many stoppages the insert has failed and the housing is still sound. If the spherical seat shows no play or marks, you can replace the Y-bearing alone, which has its own line. It is worth replacing the whole unit when the housing is cracked, when the insert has turned inside the seat or when the base was distorted by tightening it onto an uneven surface.
For the new unit to fit where the old one was, three things must match: the height of the shaft centre above the base, the distance between the fixing holes and the bolt diameter. Two units for the same shaft can differ in those dimensions if they belong to different series.
Send us the complete designation of the housing and, if you can read it, that of the insert. If the casting is painted or worn, measure the shaft, the centre height and the hole spacing, and take one photo from the front and one of the base. Tell us whether the shaft is in millimetres or inches and how the insert is locked to the shaft: with grub screws or with a collar that is turned. The quantity and the position in the machine complete the enquiry.
