SKF N series lock nuts are the inch version of the well-known KM nuts: they secure a bearing on its adapter sleeve or at the shaft end, and are locked with a W series lock washer of the same number. They are used in machines and housings of North American origin, where the shaft and adapter sleeve come in inch sizes.

The nut number indicates the thread size, and it pairs with the washer: an N 10 is locked with a W 10. The nut tightens the bearing against the tapered adapter sleeve or against the shaft shoulder, and the lock washer prevents it from loosening with vibration: one of its tabs is bent into one of the nut slots.

To mount it, use a hook spanner of the correct size, never a punch and hammer, which damage the slots and leave the nut unable to be retightened. In adapter sleeve mounts, the tightening defines the final internal clearance of the bearing, so it is advisable to follow the tightening angle indicated by the bearing manufacturer.

When replacing a bearing, it is recommended to also replace the lock washer: a tab that has already been bent once loses strength. The nut can be reused if the thread and slots are in good condition.
