SKF lock washers: MB, W and MS series

The SKF lock washer stops a lock nut from working loose. It has an inner tongue that enters the shaft keyway or the slot in the sleeve, and outer tabs that are bent into a slot of the nut. It is a small part that decides whether the bearing keeps its position. Each washer series works with one nut series, and the number links them.

Each washer with its nut

MB 4 is the washer for the KM 4 nut: same number, metric thread. MBL 24 does the same job for the low-section nuts of the KML series. W 03 is the washer for the inch-thread nuts of the N series. An MB washer does not replace a W of the same number, because the bore and the tongue correspond to another thread.

MS 3044 is not a washer but a locking clip: a part bolted to the nut that engages a slot, used on the large nuts of the HM series. It is identified by the complete code and by the nut it works with. If the designation carries a letter at the end, it is another execution of the same size.

When to replace it

The tabs of the washer are bent when locking and straightened when dismantling. After a few cycles the material fatigues and a tab may shear in service. That is why the usual practice is to fit a new washer every time the nut is removed, even if the old one looks intact.

Look at the inner tongue as well. If it is marked or twisted, the nut has been trying to turn and the fit and the keyway should be checked. On an adapter sleeve, the washer comes with the set; when ordered separately, you need to know which sleeve or nut it belongs to.

Details for a quote

Send us the washer designation and the quantity. If it cannot be read, give us the designation of the nut or sleeve it works with: that is enough to identify it. Without either, measure the inside diameter, the outside diameter and the thickness, and count the tabs. Stating whether the shaft thread is metric or inch avoids confusing the series.

Can a lock washer be reused?

It is not advisable. The tabs fatigue when bent; fit a new one at every assembly.

Which washer does a KM 4 nut take?

The MB 4. In the KM and MB series the number matches.

Are MB and W interchangeable?

No. They correspond to different threads, metric and inch.

Main series

SKF MB series lock washer

The SKF MB series lock washer is a fastening component used together with a slotted lock nut to secure bearings and other elements on threaded shafts. Its design with an inner tab and several outer tabs allows positive locking: one tab fits into the shaft groove and another is bent into a notch in the nut. This prevents the nut from loosening due to vibration or rotation. MR Accesorios Industriales sells this series as part of its line of bushings and sleeves.

SKF lock washer W series

The SKF lock washer W series is a locking component placed between the adjustment nut and the bearing to prevent the nut from loosening due to vibration. Its design with an inner and outer tab allows locking the nut in the desired position. It is used in bearing assemblies mounted on shafts, where tightening safety is critical.

SKF MS Lock Clips

SKF MS designations correspond to lock clips for lock nuts. They are locking elements secured with a screw. They are identified by their full code and by the lock nut they work with.
