SKF solid-base split housings: SSNLD and SSNHD

SKF solid-base housings are the reinforced version of the split plummer block housings. The base does not have the elongated anchor holes: it is solid and is drilled to suit the structure where the housing is mounted. They are made of a stronger material than the grey cast iron of standard housings, for high loads, shocks or forces that do not act straight towards the base.

SSNLD, SSNHD and the final block

SSNLD 510-608 keeps the double number of split housings: the same body accepts two bearing sizes. SSNHD 510-608 is the equivalent in the SNH series. The size is read just as in the standard series, so the bearing, the sleeve and the seals are the same as for the ordinary housing with that number.

The block after the slash describes how the base is prepared. SSNLD 510-608/MS1 and SSNLD 216/MS2 are housings with the anchor holes already made, in two different arrangements; without that block, the base comes undrilled. It changes the mounting work, so it must be copied.

When the solid base is chosen

A standard housing is designed for the load to push towards the base. When the load pulls upwards, acts sideways or arrives with shocks, the cap, the bolts and the base work differently, and that is where the reinforced version has margin. It is common on heavy conveyors, crushing, large fans and equipment with harsh starts.

The undrilled base lets you place the anchors where the structure requires and choose between two and four bolts. In return it must be drilled with care: the holes go in the area specified by the manufacturer and with the housing well supported, so as not to weaken the base or distort the bearing seat.

Details for a quote

Send us the complete designation, with the /MS block if it has one, and the quantity. State the bearing, the sleeve and the shaft diameter, and tell us which way the load acts and whether there are shocks. If it replaces a standard housing, give us the designation of the old one and the dimensions of the existing anchors: it helps decide between a drilled and an undrilled base.

Does it use the same accessories as an SNL?

For the same number, yes: bearing, sleeve, seals and rings are chosen the same way.

What does /MS1 or /MS2 indicate?

That the base comes with anchor holes, in one of two arrangements. Without the block, it comes undrilled.

Is the reinforced housing always advisable?

It is justified with high loads, shocks or loads that do not act towards the base.
