Lock washers

The lock washer is placed between the bearing and the lock nut to prevent the nut from loosening due to vibration. It has an inner tab that fits into a groove on the shaft or sleeve and several outer tabs, one of which is bent into a slot on the nut. It is always used together with a precision lock nut and is selected based on the size of that nut, not the shaft.

The part number is a size code, not the shaft diameter: it identifies the thread of the nut and the washer dimensions. Each washer size goes with the nut of the same number in its series, for example MB 10 with an SKF KM 10 nut. The MB series from BGL, SKF, FAG and TIMKEN share the same size numbering: MB0, MB1, MB 10, MB30. NTN uses the AWL24, AWL26, AWL28 series, with a final X in some variants.

It is installed on shafts of gearboxes, fans, pumps, conveyor rollers and other rotating equipment subject to vibration. It is advisable to use a new washer each time the assembly is disassembled, because a tab that has already been bent may break when bent again.
