Adapter sleeves in inches

The adapter sleeve in inches allows mounting a tapered bore bearing on a cylindrical shaft whose diameter is expressed in inches, common in North American equipment and imported machinery. The sleeve is tapered on the outside and cylindrical on the inside, with a slot that allows it to close onto the shaft. When the nut is tightened, the bearing moves up the cone and becomes secure, without a shoulder or keyway on the shaft.

In the SKF SNW series, the designation carries two data separated by an X: a size number and then the shaft diameter in inches. In SNW 10X1.11/16 the shaft is 1 11/16 inches, and in SNW 13X2.3/16 it is 2 3/16. The first number is a size code linked to the bearing, not the shaft diameter. BGL appears with the HA series, with codes such as HA2340 and HA2344, which follow the same series and size logic.

The selection starts from three data: the shaft diameter in inches, the bearing designation, and the nut with its lock washer. The sleeve must correspond to the bearing series, because the taper and thread size change between series. It is not advisable to replace an inch sleeve with a metric one of similar size: the shaft and bore do not match and the fit is not secure.
