Timing belts

Timing belts are toothed transmission elements that mesh with pulleys of the same pitch to deliver synchronized movement, without slippage. They are chosen when the transmission ratio must remain exact and space is limited, as in positioning mechanisms, printers, automation equipment or transmissions where slipping is not allowed. To select the correct belt you have to start from the pitch, the profile and the width, and verify that the pulley is compatible with that pitch and profile.

In the PHG line of SKF, the series that appear in the catalog are identified by their profile and construction. XL, L, H, XH and XXH are classic profiles of pitch in inches, where the letter indicates the size and load capacity. T2.5, T5, T10 and AT are metric profiles of pitch in millimeters, used in compact and positioning transmissions. 5M, 8M and 14M correspond to metric profiles of pitch in millimeters for increasing powers. The XPZ, SPZ, SPA and SPB series are narrow V-belt profiles that are also offered in synchronous version to combine with grooved pulleys. Codes with EP usually indicate special constructions, and those that include PK correspond to Poly-V transmission belts.

Typical applications of timing belts include precision transmissions in machine tools, packaging equipment, textile, food, printing and automation industries. They are also used in pumps, compressors and fans where constant speed is required. In all cases, the belt must work with the appropriate pulley and with the correct tension to avoid premature wear or tooth jumps.
