Slew drives

A slew drive, also called a slewing drive, is a ready-to-mount assembly: a slewing ring, the worm that turns it and the housing that holds and protects both. It carries axial load, radial load and tilting moment at the same time and transmits rotation through the reduction of the worm gear, so it only needs an electric or hydraulic motor. It is used in solar trackers, aerial platforms, cranes, special machinery and automation equipment.

TECMA DRIVE publishes eight families. The standard TD-E has a motor input at both ends of the worm, a cataphoresis-coated housing and IP65 sealing, with IP66 as an option. The reinforced version adds mounting holes to spread the load over the structure and a hexagon to turn it by hand during adjustments or emergencies. The double worm version engages two worms on the same ring, with less backlash and more load capacity on the teeth. The open version does without a closed housing and is meant for indoor installations; the double-row ball version is stiffer against tilting. The range is completed by the light anodized aluminium drive for aerial platforms, the vertical solar type TV for vertical-axis trackers and the SealTech execution, with HNBR seals and treatments for very severe service.

Catalogue codes start with TD followed by letters and numbers, such as TD-E14-RL, TD-W17-RA, TD-2-E19-RL or TD-O-14-LA. Request them complete, exactly as shown on the nameplate: two drives that differ only in the ending are not interchangeable. To select a new one, start from the tilting moment, the axial and radial loads, the output torque and the rotation speed the equipment needs; then define the motor, the protection rating and the anti-corrosion treatment for the working environment.
