SKF sealing washers: Z series

SKF sealing washers are thin discs mounted at the side of a bearing to close the space between shaft and housing. They do not rub like a shaft seal: they leave a very small gap that slows the escape of grease and the entry of coarse dirt. They are a simple, compact protection for grease-lubricated supports where there is no room for a more elaborate seal.

The number and the bearing

The designation starts with Z and a number that refers to the size of the bearing it goes with: Z 007 and Z 008 are two consecutive sizes. It is not a direct dimension in millimetres, so the washer is chosen from the bearing designation and not by measuring the shaft.

The letter that may follow the number distinguishes the execution. Z 008 F and Z 010 F are the variant that adds a felt element to the disc, to improve the closure. The version without a letter and the version with F of the same number share the mounting position and are not the same reference.

How it works and where it goes

The washer is clamped against one of the bearing rings and forms a narrow gap against the other. Depending on the arrangement, it is held by the inner ring, with the nut or the shaft shoulder, or by the outer ring, with the housing cover. It is common to fit more than one, facing each other, to form a small labyrinth.

Since there is no contact, it adds no friction and does not wear, but it does not retain oil or withstand jets of water either. If the environment has liquids or very fine dust, a contact seal is needed as well. When dismantling, check that the washers are not distorted: a bent washer rubs and raises the temperature.

Details for a quote

Send us the washer designation and the quantity. If you do not have it, give us the designation of the bearing it is mounted next to and tell us how many washers there were and on which side. Let us know whether the removed ones had felt. That identifies the size and the execution. If the support is losing grease, describe the environment: another type of seal may be advisable.

Is the number the shaft diameter?

No. It refers to the bearing size; choose it by the bearing designation.

Does it replace a shaft seal?

It does not retain oil. It is for grease and coarse dirt, or as a complement to a seal.

What does the F indicate?

The variant with a felt element. It is another reference of the same size.
