What is a Gummi coupling and what is it for?
A Gummi coupling is an elastic coupling that transmits power between two shafts, absorbing misalignments, vibrations and shocks. Its flexible rubber element is key: it allows some torsional flexibility and reduces the transmission of unwanted loads to the connected equipment.
They are used in pumps, compressors, fans, conveyors, mixers and a wide variety of industrial machinery. The ability to compensate for angular, parallel and axial misalignments makes them ideal for applications where perfect assembly is difficult to achieve or where there are relative movements between shafts.
At MR Accesorios Industriales, as an official Gummi distributor, we sell a line of 95 coupling references to cover different torque and speed requirements.
Typical applications of Gummi couplings by industry
In the food industry, Gummi couplings are used in sanitary pumps and conveyors, where hygiene and resistance to frequent washdowns are important. The rubber is resistant to many cleaning agents and does not contaminate the product.
In water and effluent treatment plants, they are mounted on centrifugal pumps and blowers. The elasticity of the coupling protects the equipment's bearings against shock loads and misalignments typical of bases that are not perfectly rigid.
In mining and quarries, Gummi couplings are used in conveyor belts, crushers and screens. The robustness of the design and the ability to absorb severe vibrations extend the life of the connected components.
In the chemical and petrochemical industry, they are used in agitators and process pumps. Selecting the correct rubber compound is critical to withstand exposure to chemicals and temperatures.
How to select the right Gummi coupling?
Selecting a Gummi coupling requires knowing the torque to be transmitted, the rotation speed, the shaft diameter and the environmental conditions. Torque is calculated from the motor power and RPM, applying a service factor according to the type of load (uniform, with shocks, etc.).
The maximum allowable misalignment and the desired torsional stiffness must also be considered. Gummi couplings offer different degrees of flexibility depending on the model and the rubber compound.
At MR we help you choose the correct model: you send us your application data and we quote the appropriate reference. We work with codes such as A-50, A-20 and A-90, among others.
Correct assembly of a Gummi coupling
Gummi coupling assembly must be done carefully to avoid damaging the elastic element. First, clean the shafts and hubs, check that there are no burrs or dents. Mount the hubs on the shafts respecting the tolerances indicated by the manufacturer.
Then, align the shafts as best as possible. Although the coupling tolerates misalignments, precise alignment reduces rubber wear and extends its life. Use a dial indicator or ruler and feeler gauges to align angularly and in parallel.
Finally, insert the elastic element and tighten the fastening screws to the recommended torque. Check that there is no interference and that the coupling rotates freely before starting the equipment.
Preventive maintenance of Gummi couplings
Maintenance of Gummi couplings is simple but essential. Visually inspect the rubber element at each scheduled stop: look for cracks, wear, permanent deformation or signs of overheating (burnt or hardened rubber).
Periodically check the shaft alignment and the tightening of the screws. Excessive vibrations or abnormal noises usually indicate misalignment or wear of the elastic element.
If the rubber element is damaged, replace it. Do not try to repair it with adhesives or extend its use: a damaged coupling can cause major failures in the connected equipment. At MR we quote the original Gummi spare part.
Advantages of Gummi couplings compared to other types
Gummi couplings offer an excellent ratio between vibration absorption capacity and cost. Compared to rigid couplings, they protect the equipment's bearings and seals much better.
Unlike jaw couplings with a polyurethane spider, Gummi rubber has greater damping and can be more tolerant to misalignments. In addition, replacing the elastic element is quick and does not require moving the equipment.
In applications where there are shock loads or reversal of rotation, the elasticity of the rubber reduces torque peaks and prevents premature breakage.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Gummi coupling?
It is an elastic coupling that transmits power between shafts, absorbing misalignments, vibrations and shocks. Its flexible rubber element protects the connected equipment.
How do I select the correct Gummi coupling?
You need to know the torque to be transmitted, the speed, the shaft diameter and the working conditions. With that data, at MR we help you choose the right model.
How often should I check the Gummi coupling?
It is recommended to visually inspect the rubber element at each scheduled stop, and to check alignment and screw tightening at least every 3 months.
Can I replace only the rubber of the Gummi coupling?
Yes, the elastic element is replaceable. It must not be repaired with adhesives; it is replaced with an original spare part to ensure correct operation.
Is MR Accesorios Industriales an official Gummi distributor?
Yes, MR is an official Gummi distributor in Argentina. We sell the coupling line and provide technical advice.
