Spherical roller bearings

Spherical roller bearings have two rows of rollers and a spherical raceway on the outer ring. They support high radial loads and axial loads in both directions, and tolerate misalignment between shaft and housing due to deflection or mounting error. They are used in belt-driven equipment, conveyors, fans, pumps, gearboxes, mills and machinery with vibration.

The designation includes the series and size. In 22205CE4 from NSK, the series is 222 and the size 05, which multiplied by 5 gives 25 mm bore; in 21305 CC from SKF, the series is 213 and the same size also gives 25 mm. The letter K indicates tapered bore, as in 20205-K-TVP-C3 from FAG, and C3 a greater internal clearance than normal. The suffix W33, present in NTN codes, indicates groove and lubrication holes in the outer ring. Each brand writes internal designs with its own letters (CC, EA, CD), so the complete code must be copied.

To choose, start from load, speed, lubrication and temperature. With tapered bore, mounting is done with adapter sleeve or withdrawal sleeve, useful on long shafts or without shoulder. The choice of internal clearance depends on fit and temperature difference between rings: the tighter the fit or the hotter, the more clearance. The cage and design type are defined according to speed and vibration.
