Needle roller bearings

Needle roller bearings use long, small-diameter cylindrical rollers, which gives them high radial load capacity in a very small radial space. They are chosen when there is no room for a conventional ball or roller bearing: gearboxes, pumps, compressors, power tools, transmissions, production machinery, and automation equipment. There are drawn cup needle roller bearings, machined ring bearings, with or without an inner ring, and axial assemblies.

In drawn cup bearings, the code includes the dimensions. In HK 0408 from SKF and HK4516 from NTN, the first two digits are the shaft diameter in millimeters and the last two are the width: 4 mm by 8 in the first, 45 by 16 in the second. The initial letter distinguishes the construction: HK is an open drawn cup and BK, such as BK 1212 and BK4516, has a closed end. The suffix TN, as in HK 0306 TN, indicates a polyamide cage. In INA, the AS series of AS0414 and AS0515 corresponds to washers for axial assemblies.

To select, it is determined whether the shaft can act as a raceway. Drawn cup bearings and bearings without an inner ring require a hardened and ground shaft with a good finish; if the shaft does not meet this, an inner ring is used. Lubrication, load, and housing tolerance must also be checked, because the drawn cup is press-fitted and takes its shape. Needle rollers do not accept axial loads, for which axial elements are added.
