Timing belts

Timing belts are toothed power transmission elements that mesh with pulleys of the same pitch to deliver synchronized motion without slippage. They are selected when the transmission ratio must remain exact and space is limited, such as in positioning mechanisms, printers, automation equipment, or drives where slippage is not allowed. To select the correct belt, start with the pitch, profile, and width, and verify that the pulley is compatible with that pitch and profile.

In the SKF PHG line, the series shown in the catalog are identified by their profile and construction. XL, L, H, XH, and XXH are classic inch-pitch profiles, where the letter indicates size and load capacity. T2.5, T5, T10, and AT are metric profiles with pitch in millimeters, used in compact drives and positioning applications. 5M, 8M, and 14M correspond to metric profiles with pitch in millimeters for increasing power. The XPZ, SPZ, SPA, and SPB series are narrow V-belt profiles also offered in a synchronous version to combine with grooved pulleys. Codes with EP usually indicate special constructions, and those that include PK correspond to Poly-V belts.

Typical applications for timing belts include precision drives in machine tools, packaging equipment, textile, food, printing, and automation industries. They are also used in pumps, compressors, and fans where constant speed is required. In all cases, the belt must run with the proper pulley and correct tension to prevent premature wear or tooth jumping.
