Slewing rings

A slewing ring is a large-diameter bearing that joins two structures and allows one to rotate relative to the other, while simultaneously supporting axial load, radial load and tilting moment. It can have external or internal gear teeth, cut into one of its rings, so that a pinion drives it, or no gear teeth. It is used in cranes, excavators, aerial platforms, turntables, antennas and mining and construction machinery.

TECMA DRIVE codes are read in blocks separated by periods, such as E.505.20.00.B, I.505.20.00.C or SD.616.14.00.B.R-ZT. The first letter gives the gearing: E external, I internal and SD no gear teeth. In the B, C and R-ZT series, the second numeric block is the ball or roller diameter in millimetres: 20 in the light series, 25 or 32 in other ball series and 14 in the crossed roller series. The ending gives the execution: B, solid rings; C, flanged; B.R-ZT, crossed rollers; D followed by a number, special versions. That is why the code must be requested complete: two slewing rings that differ only in the ending are not interchangeable.

When selecting, start with the loads: axial, radial and tilting moment, both in normal operation and with maximum load. This defines the construction type and diameter. Then choose the gear type (external, internal or no gear), rotation accuracy, clearance and mounting: the slewing ring must rest on flat, rigid surfaces and is bolted with high-strength bolts, with the specified tightening torque. Lubrication and sealing depend on the working environment.
