Couplings

A coupling connects two shafts to transmit torque and, depending on its construction, absorbs misalignments, vibrations and shocks. It is selected based on the working torque and speed, the diameters of the two shafts, the expected misalignment and the free space between the machines. It is used between motors and pumps, gearboxes, compressors, fans and conveyors.

The designation varies by brand, but almost always combines series, size and component. In RINGSPANN, DCD / size 005 and DCD / size 035 indicate the series and size. SKF PHE codes, such as PHE 1020TGGRID or PHE 1020TGHCOVER, carry the coupling size followed by the part: the grid, covers or kits. In RUADIGON, X-1 · Normal hub with screws names the part within the coupling; A-20 and A-50 (GUMMI) are sizes of the same series, and CR10020H (TSUBAKI) is ordered complete, including the final letter.

Flexible couplings tolerate misalignment and dampen shocks; rigid couplings require precisely aligned shafts and transmit rotation without backlash. To replace one, it is advisable to identify which part failed, whether the hub, the elastic element, the grid or the cover, because each component has its own code and is quoted separately.
