The SKF V-ring is a rubber ring that is stretched onto the shaft and rotates with it. Its lip bears sideways against a surface perpendicular to the shaft, such as the face of a housing or a cover, and acts as a seal and as a flinger. It is used alone or in front of a radial shaft seal, to stop dust and splashes before they reach the main lip.

In 20 VA R the number identifies the ring size, which corresponds to a range of shaft diameters, and VA is the profile. The final letter distinguishes the material: 16 VA V is the same profile in another compound. 8 VS R and 140 VL R are other profiles, with a different cross-section for other spaces or conditions.
Because the ring is stretched when fitted, the number in the code does not necessarily match the shaft diameter. There are also numeric references, such as 400050, that show neither the profile nor the size. In those cases the code is copied in full and the dimensions are confirmed separately.
A V-ring seals sideways, so the surface the lip bears on matters as much as the shaft. That face must be smooth, perpendicular to the shaft and at the right distance: too far and the lip does not touch; too close and it rubs too hard and wears. When taking measurements, note the width between the back of the ring and the counterface.
At high speeds the ring tends to open under centrifugal force and may need a support to contain it. And since it sits on the outer side, the material must withstand whatever is in the environment: grease, water, heat, cleaning products. If the previous one hardened or cracked, that says something about the compound and is worth mentioning.
