SKF radial shaft seals close the gap where a rotating shaft passes through its housing: they retain the lubricant and keep dust and water out. In the catalog they appear with two kinds of part number. One shows the dimensions followed by the design; the other is a number that says nothing about size. Knowing which one you are holding organizes the whole search.

In 6X16X5 HMSA10 RG the three numbers are, in millimetres, the shaft diameter, the housing bore and the seal width. Then comes the design, HMSA10, and finally a block of letters that identifies the lip execution. 8X22X7 HMSA10 V and 8X22X7 HMS5 RG share dimensions and are not the same seal: the execution changes in one case and the design in the other.
12X22X7 CRW1 R belongs to another design family, with its own final block. The reference 1850, on the other hand, is one of those identified by number only: its dimensions cannot be worked out from the code. If the old seal still shows any marking, copy it in full, with spaces and letters, before measuring anything.
A seal is chosen for the shaft it seals, not for the machine. What matters is the direction the lip faces, what is on each side — oil, grease, water, dust — and the temperature and speed at that point. Two identical gearboxes can carry different seals at the input and at the output. When there is dust on the outer side, check whether the removed seal had a second lip: that design detail is lost if you only pass on the dimensions.
Before fitting the replacement, look at the shaft surface. A groove worn by the previous lip makes a new seal leak in a short time. In that case the order changes: besides the seal you may need a wear sleeve, which is a separate line in the SKF catalog.
The most direct route is the complete part number and the quantity. Without it, send the three dimensions taken with a caliper on the shaft and the housing, not on the deformed seal, plus a photo of each face. Tell us which fluid it retains, whether there is dust or water around it, the approximate operating temperature and whether the shaft turns in one direction only. Naming the machine and the position (input, output, wheel) helps avoid confusing two similar seals on the same equipment.
