SKF V-belts: sections and lengths

SKF V-belts carry the PHG prefix, which they share with the brand's other belts. What sets them apart comes next: the profile section and a length number. This line holds classical, narrow and cogged sections, and each one measures length in its own way. Reading those two parts correctly avoids ordering a belt that fits the pulley but turns out long or short.

Section and length in the PHG part number

In PHG B24 and PHG C40, the letter is the classical section and the number is the nominal length under that standard. PHG SPB1250 is a narrow section and its number gives the length in millimetres. PHG 3V250 belongs to another family of narrow sections, with its own scale. Numbers are not compared across families: a 250 in one is not a 1250 in another through a simple conversion.

An X attached to the section indicates a cogged belt of the same profile, and a final block of letters marks a particular construction. Both are part of the reference. If the worn belt no longer shows any marking, the section is recognized by measuring the top width and the height, and the length with a tape around the pulleys.

The belt in its set of pulleys

A V-belt works on the flanks of the groove, not on the bottom. If the new belt sinks until it touches the bottom, the pulley is worn and changing the belt does not solve the slipping. Check the grooves with a gauge or against a new belt before ordering.

In multi-belt drives, replace all the belts together with the same reference. Mixing a new belt with stretched ones makes the new one carry the whole load. Also consider the travel of the tensioner: if it is already at the end, the removed belt has elongated and its measurement is no use as a reference.

Details for quoting belts

Send us the complete PHG reference and how many belts the drive uses. If it cannot be read, give us the top width and the height of the section, the length measured on the outside, the diameters of both pulleys and the centre distance. With those details the profile and the length can be confirmed. Stating whether the original belt was cogged and how many grooves each pulley has avoids a second enquiry.

Are B24 and SPB1250 measured the same way?

No. Each family of sections uses its own length scale; do not convert one into the other.

Can I replace a single belt in a set?

It is advisable to replace the whole set, with the same reference on all of them.

Does a cogged belt replace the plain one of the same section?

It seats in the same groove, but it is another reference. Confirm it before mixing types in one drive.
