SKF roller chains: PHC series and part numbers

SKF roller chains in the catalog carry the PHC prefix and are organized by size, number of strands and pack length. Chain lengths, connecting links and offset links share the same line, each with its own part number. So the first step of an order is not measuring the pitch: it is deciding whether you need the chain, the link that closes it, or both.

How a PHC part number is built

In PHC 25-1X10FT, the number after the prefix is the chain size and the digit after the hyphen is the number of strands: PHC 25-2X10FT is the same chain in duplex form. The last block describes how it is packed. X10FT and X5MTR are box lengths in feet and in metres, so two part numbers can name the same chain in different boxes.

Sizes with a B, such as PHC 05B-1X5MTR, belong to the European standard series and are not mixed with the American standard sizes even when the pitch looks close. When the part number ends in C/L or O/L, as in PHC 25-1C/L and PHC 25-1O/L, it is not a length of chain: these are the connecting link and the offset link for that chain. An H attached to the size marks another execution of the same size; copy it exactly as shown.

The chain within the drive

A chain works with its two sprockets, and wear is shared by the three parts. If the replacement follows tooth skipping or visible elongation, check the sprockets before ordering the chain alone: a new chain on worn teeth fails again in the same place. Also note whether the drive is simplex, duplex or triplex, because the strand digit and the matching sprocket depend on it.

To define the length, count the links of the installed chain instead of measuring it stretched. An odd count needs an offset link in addition to the connecting link; an even count only needs the connecting link.

Details for quoting an SKF chain

Send us the complete PHC part number, including the pack block, and the number of boxes or metres you need. Without a part number, give the pitch measured between pin centres, the inner width between plates, the roller diameter and the number of strands, with a photo of the chain lying next to a ruler. Add how many connecting and offset links are required and, if you are replacing them, the tooth count and shaft diameter of each sprocket.

Are X10FT and X5MTR different chains?

It is the pack length: the box in feet or in metres. Size and strands are read before the X.

How do I order a spare connecting link?

It has its own part number, ending in C/L. Order it by that reference in the quantity the assembly needs.

Can I replace a 05B with a 25?

They belong to different standards. Compare pitch, inner width and roller before switching, and check the sprockets.
