SKF spherical roller thrust bearings

SKF spherical roller thrust bearings are used when the axial load is very high and, in addition, the shaft is not perfectly aligned with its support. They have asymmetrical rollers inclined on a spherical raceway, which lets them adapt to shaft deflection and also take some radial load. They are common on heavy vertical shafts, extruders, large gearboxes and propellers.

Series 292, 293 and 294

The first three digits name the series: 29230 E belongs to series 292, the lightest, and 29317 E to series 293, with a larger section for the same bore. Series 294 is the heaviest. The last two digits give the bore size, as in other bearings. The letters that follow identify the execution: 29248 carries no letter and 29476 EM adds a second one.

For the same bore, moving from one series to another changes the outside diameter and the height. That is why the shaft diameter is not enough to order it: the whole designation is needed, and it is usually engraved on the face of one of the washers.

Load, lubrication and mounting

This bearing works with axial load in one direction only. If the thrust can reverse, the equipment carries two facing each other or a second bearing on the other side. It also needs a permanent minimum axial load: unloaded and at high speed the rollers tend to move away from the raceway, which is why many arrangements use preload springs.

Because of the roller shape there is sliding against the guide flange, and oil lubrication is the most common. With grease, it must be ensured that it reaches that contact. It is a separable bearing: the shaft washer with rollers and cage on one side, and the housing washer on the other. When dismantling, keep the parts of each set together.

Details for a quote

Send us the complete designation and the quantity. Without a code, measure the bore, the outside diameter and the total height of the assembled bearing. Tell us which machine it runs on, whether the shaft is vertical or horizontal, the speed, and whether lubrication is by oil or grease. If the previous one failed, describe how the rollers and the flange looked: it helps to review the minimum load and the lubricant.

Does it carry radial load?

Some, as long as the axial load is the main one. For predominantly radial load another bearing is used.

Does it work for thrust in both directions?

No. It works in one direction; both require two bearings.

Are 29230 and 29330 interchangeable?

No. They share the bore, and the outside diameter and height change.

Main series

SKF Spherical Roller Thrust Bearings

SKF spherical roller thrust bearings are components designed to support very high axial loads while allowing slight angular misalignment between the shaft and the housing. They are used in applications where the load is predominantly axial and mounting conditions do not guarantee perfect alignment. MR Accesorios Industriales carries this line as a brand to provide a robust solution for industrial equipment.

SKF spherical roller thrust bearings

SKF spherical roller thrust bearings are components designed to support high axial loads while allowing a certain angular misalignment. Their design with spherical rollers and spherical raceway makes them suitable for applications where the shaft may flex or alignment is not perfect. They are used in heavy machinery, mining equipment, steelmaking and other industries requiring robustness and reliability.
