Self-aligning ball bearings SKF: identification

SKF self-aligning ball bearings have two rows of balls running against a spherical raceway in the outer ring. This construction accommodates angular misalignment between the shaft and its support. Within the SKF range, distinguish them from deep groove ball bearings and spherical roller bearings: self-alignment describes a feature of the assembly, but does not identify its rolling elements or the required part number on its own.

Read every part of the marking

The references 1200 ETN9 and 1201 ETN9 share the series beginning and the final letter group, but have different basic numbers. Keep both pieces of information when searching. The designation 1202 ETN9/C3 also includes a group after a slash; removing it leaves this variant incompletely identified.

The catalogue also includes 1205 EKTN9. Compare the marking character by character: ETN9 and EKTN9 are not alternative spellings to combine in an enquiry. They are retained exactly as listed here, without asserting equivalence or inferring the mounting arrangement from an isolated letter. If the marking is worn, photograph several areas of the ring before suggesting a code.

Misalignment and bearing position

Fan shafts, belt drives and agricultural machinery appear among the catalogue applications for this construction. Identify the actual bearing position: one drive can contain different bearings even though they belong to the same machine. Also explain whether the bearing was removed directly from the shaft or from a housed assembly.

The ability to accommodate misalignment does not remove the need to examine the housing. For a failure enquiry, show the assembled unit, neighbouring supports and marks noticed during removal. A shaft that appears off-centre is not, by itself, a reason to choose a different bearing variant.

Prepare an enquiry around the identified part

Send the quantity and full designation, together with the bore, outside diameter and width. Include a photograph of the marking and another showing the bearing with its mounting components. Identify the machine, shaft and bearing position; if an exploded drawing is available, mark the relevant item. This preserves both the identity of the replacement and the context in which it operates.

Are self-aligning ball and spherical roller bearings the same?

No. Their rolling elements differ, and they have separate SKF pages. Identify the construction in your assembly before comparing references.

Can the letters be omitted from an enquiry?

Retain every marked group. Catalogue references distinguish variants even when some of the numbers match.

Which photograph helps when the code is unreadable?

Views of the marking, rings and mounting arrangement support the measurements without guessing the inscription.

Main series

SKF Self-Aligning Ball Bearings ETN9

SKF self-aligning ball bearings from the ETN9 series are double-row ball bearings with a spherical raceway in the outer ring, allowing them to compensate for angular misalignment between shaft and housing. They are used in applications where perfect alignment cannot be guaranteed, such as belt drives, fans or agricultural machinery. MR Accesorios Industriales carries this series as part of its SKF bearing line.

SKF self-aligning ball bearings series 12

SKF self-aligning ball bearings are ball bearings with two rows and a spherical raceway in the outer ring, which allows them to compensate for angular misalignment between shaft and housing. They are used in applications where perfect alignment cannot be guaranteed, such as belt drives, fans or agricultural machine shafts. Their self-aligning design makes them versatile and easy to mount.

SKF Self-Aligning Ball Bearings

The self-aligning ball bearing has two rows of balls with a common spherical outer raceway, which allows it to absorb angular misalignment between the shaft and the housing —due to shaft deflection or mounting error— without transmitting that misalignment as extra load to the balls.
