K 14X18X13 is a radial assembly: the three numbers are the diameter of the shaft the needles roll on, the housing diameter and the cage width. K 6X9X8 TN follows the same logic and adds execution letters. The difference between the first two numbers is twice the needle diameter, and there is nothing else between shaft and housing.
AXK 1024 is an axial assembly: its four digits combine the bore and the outside diameter. It works between two flat surfaces. When those surfaces are not hardened, washers are added: AS 1024 is the thin washer of the same size and LS 1226 belongs to the series of thicker washers. Cage assembly and washers are ordered separately, with the same size number.
Without rings, the precision of the bearing comes from the shaft and the housing. They must be hardened, ground and within the tolerance stated by the manufacturer, because the operating clearance results from those dimensions. A shaft worn by a few hundredths changes the clearance and the cage runs with knocks.
The cage also needs lateral guidance: a shoulder, a washer or a retaining ring on each side, with a small clearance. If it rubs against a rough or burred surface, it wears on the side. In the axial versions, the two support faces must be parallel and square to the shaft.
