SKF FNL flanged housings: series and codes

SKF FNL housings are flanged housings: they are bolted to a wall or plate of the machine, with the shaft perpendicular to that surface. They are used where there is no horizontal base for a plummer block, such as at the end of a conveyor or on the side of a frame. They take tapered bore bearings mounted on an adapter sleeve, just like split plummer block housings.

Size and execution

In FNL 505 A, the letters name the series and the number is the size, which refers to the bearing and the sleeve it takes. The final letter distinguishes the execution: FNL 505 A and FNL 505 B are the same size in two variants, and the difference lies in how the shaft side is closed. FNL 509 A is the first variant in a larger size.

As with other housings, the code identifies the housing. The bearing, the sleeve with its nut and washer, and the locating rings have their own designations. Ordering a complete assembly means naming each part.

The wall it is mounted on

A flanged housing passes the load to the wall through the bolts and the spigot. The surface must be flat and perpendicular to the shaft: if the plate is distorted, the housing sits tilted and the bearing runs under strain, even though it is self-aligning. Also check that the plate is stiff enough, because thin sheet vibrates and loosens the bolts.

Before replacing, measure the bolt circle, the number and diameter of the holes and the spigot diameter. See whether the shaft passes through the housing or ends inside: the execution and the matching seal depend on it.

Details for quoting an FNL housing

Send us the complete designation, with its final letter, and the quantity. Add the designation of the bearing and that of the sleeve, and the actual shaft diameter. Tell us whether the shaft passes through or ends inside, what the mounting surface is like and what is in the environment. If the code cannot be read, the flange dimensions and a photo from the front are enough to identify it.

Are FNL 505 A and FNL 505 B interchangeable?

They have the same size and a different execution. Choose according to how the shaft ends.

Does the housing include the bearing?

No. Bearing, sleeve and rings are ordered under their own designations.

Can I replace a plummer block with a flanged housing?

Only if the machine has a flat, stiff wall, perpendicular to the shaft, to fix it on.
