Spherical roller bearings

Spherical roller bearings are self-aligning bearings with two rows of rollers and a spherical raceway on the outer ring. This construction allows them to support high radial loads and axial loads in both directions, while also tolerating angular misalignment between the shaft and housing, whether due to shaft deflection or mounting errors. They are chosen when the application combines significant load with shafts that are not perfectly aligned, for example in belt drive equipment or in machines subject to vibration.

In the MR catalog you will find series such as 213 and 222, which are the most common designations within SKF spherical roller bearings. Series 213 corresponds to double row bearings with a brass or sheet metal cage, and 222 to the double row version with a spherical raceway, widely used in industrial applications. The suffixes that appear in the part numbers, such as E, KTN9, or C3, indicate design variants: E usually denotes an optimized design with higher load capacity, KTN9 a type of polyamide cage, and C3 an internal clearance greater than normal, necessary when the bearing operates at high temperature or with mounting fits that reduce the clearance.

Typical applications for spherical roller bearings include power transmission equipment, conveyor belts, food industry machines, industrial fans, pumps, and gearboxes. They are also used in split plummer block housings and in assemblies where the shaft can deflect under load. Being self-aligning, they absorb small misalignment errors without generating additional stresses on the shaft or the housing.
