Needle cages and needle components are used when radial space is minimal and load is high. A needle cage is the assembly of needles guided by a cage, without rings: it runs directly between the shaft and housing, which must be hardened and ground as raceways. Also included are washers and auxiliary elements for assembling thrust units. It is selected according to shaft diameter, housing diameter, width and load.
In many designations, the dimensions are in the code itself. In K105×112×21 from NTN, the first number is the diameter under the needles, i.e., the shaft or raceway; the second, the outside diameter of the assembly, which seats in the housing; and the third, the width. INA uses the same K series, with codes such as K10, K100 or K105 that identify the size. In SKF, codes RC-10X10 C and RC-15X15 CD carry the dimensions separated by X, and in INA washers AS0414 and AS0515 complete the thrust assemblies. NSK appears with codes such as FBN-758120 and FWF-758130.
Typical applications are gearboxes, pumps, compressors, machine tools and transmission equipment where load capacity is needed in a small volume. They are also useful in repairs to replace a worn cage without changing the entire assembly. In all cases, verify the hardness and finish of the raceways, lubrication and shaft and housing tolerances.
