CARB roller bearings

CARB bearings are self-aligning radial bearings with articulated toroidal rollers: the outer raceway is spherical and the rollers can tilt, so the assembly accommodates shaft flexing or misalignment between shaft and housing without losing radial load capacity. They are selected when angular misalignment is expected, long shafts flex, or in mounting arrangements where perfect alignment cannot be ensured, and when axial space is limited. The designation of these bearings is broken down into parts. The letter C identifies the basic series of CARB rollers, with its characteristic width-to-diameter proportion. The suffix KTN9 indicates the cage design and roller treatment: it is a construction with a polyamide cage and optimized-profile rollers, which guides the assembly and reduces friction. The suffix C3 defines the radial internal clearance, greater than standard, designed to work with interference fits or with thermal differences between shaft and housing. An example of a complete designation is C 2210 KTN9/C3, where the number 2210 defines the size within the series.

These bearings are used in applications where radial load is high and alignment is not perfect: belt or chain drives, process equipment with long shafts, pulp and paper machines, industrial fans, belt conveyors, and gearboxes. They also appear in positions where a deep groove ball bearing would not tolerate misalignment and a spherical roller bearing would be oversized in width. The tilting capacity allows the bearing to work without generating parasitic loads on the shaft or housing.
