Cardan shafts

A cardan shaft transmits torque between two shafts that are not aligned. It relies on universal joints (crosses) at the ends, which allow a bending angle, and on a telescopic section with splines that compensates for distance variations. It is used when motor and machine cannot be coupled in line or when there are relative movements, for example in rolling mills, pumps, fans, belt drives and heavy machinery and mining.

When selecting, start from the nominal torque and starting peaks, speed, bending angle at each joint and length between flanges, with the necessary compensation travel. The greater the angle, the more irregular the rotation; with both joints at the same angle and the yokes aligned in the same plane, that irregularity is compensated and the driven shaft rotates evenly. The flange connection, whether balancing is needed for high speeds, and the lubrication of joints and splines are also defined.
