Gear reducers

A gear reducer is a gearbox that lowers the motor RPM and, in return, multiplies the torque on the output shaft. It is the element that adapts an electric motor, which spins fast, to the slow speed and high load required by conveyors, mixers, agitators, elevators, pumps and crushers.

The designation combines the series with the housing size. In the Quantis series, Quantis ILH 38, Quantis ILH 68 and Quantis ILH 108 are the same series in increasing sizes, and larger size corresponds to greater torque capacity. To replace a reducer, it is best to have the nameplate on hand, with the series, size and reduction ratio.

When selecting, the starting point is the output torque and motor power, multiplied by the service factor according to the load type (uniform, moderate shock or heavy) and the daily working hours. Then define the reduction ratio, input speed, mounting arrangement (foot-mounted, flange-mounted or shaft-mounted), output shaft diameter and the radial loads it will receive, for example from a chain or pulley. The working environment, with dust, humidity or temperature, and the lubrication system also matter.
