The toroidal roller bearing is a radial bearing with a single row of long, slightly curved rollers running in concave raceways. This geometry combines the load capacity of a cylindrical roller bearing with the misalignment tolerance of a spherical roller bearing, while also allowing the inner ring to move axially relative to the outer ring with low friction. Therefore it is used as a non-locating bearing, on the shaft side that expands, in fans, conveyor belts, paper dryers, mills and gearboxes.
The FAG codes in this subcategory follow the pattern C2218-XL-K-M. The C indicates the toroidal type, the numeric block gives the series and size, and the last two digits give the bore: 18 × 5 = 90 mm. The suffixes clarify the execution: XL is FAG's higher capacity version, K indicates a tapered bore and M a solid brass cage. Therefore C2218-XL-K-M and C2218-XL-M are the same size and differ in the bore, tapered in one and cylindrical in the other, just like C2220-XL-K-M and C2220-XL-M.
The tapered bore allows mounting on an adapter sleeve or withdrawal sleeve. When selecting, compare the expected radial load, speed, misalignment and axial displacement, and verify that the mounting allows it as a non-locating bearing: the outer ring must be able to move in the housing and the shaft position is fixed by another bearing at the opposite end.
