V-ring Seals

The V-ring seal is an axial sealing element that mounts directly on the shaft and seals against a perpendicular face. Its flexible elastomer lip acts as a deflector, preventing the entry of dust, water, and particles while retaining the lubricant. It is a simple and effective solution to protect bearings and guides in contaminated environments. To choose the correct V-ring, keep in mind the shaft diameter, rotational speed, operating temperature, and type of contaminant. The lip must rest with a slight interference on the sealing face; if the shaft rotates at high speeds, verify that the elastomer is suitable.

In our selection of SKF V-ring seals, the VA R series is the most widespread. The initials VA identify the family of axial elastomer seals, and the R indicates that the lip is made of nitrile rubber (NBR), resistant to oils and greases. The example 1150 VA R shows the typical designation: the number 1150 relates to the shaft diameter for which the seal is intended. These seals mount on the shaft without the need to machine the housing, which simplifies design and maintenance.

Typical applications of V-rings include bearings on electric motors, gearboxes, pumps, fans, conveyors, and agricultural machinery. They are also used as secondary seals in combination with radial shaft seals, or as primary deflectors in very dusty environments. Since they do not require a machined sealing surface, they are ideal for shafts rotating at moderate speeds where economical and effective protection is sought.
