Hydraulic seals

A hydraulic seal is the component that contains pressurized fluid within a cylinder or circuit and, at the same time, prevents the ingress of dust, water, and particles. To select it, diameter is not enough: you must define whether it seals a rod or a piston, what pressure and temperature the system handles, what sliding speed it has, and what fluid it works with. From this comes the lip geometry, the material, and the need or not for a backup ring.

In the MR Accesorios Industriales catalog there are 189 SKF references, identified by part numbers such as DTW-437-J2G, STR 19-329-395A, G 45X55X4, PA 60X70X7X10, ZBR-50X60X7-E6W, CUT 130X109X8.1, DSW-2000-J2G, GH 32X24.5X3.2-AD1, STD187-1625-187-J1S, ZW 75X85, 504270 and RGR 16X19X6-PF. The series letters refer to design families: DTW-J2G and DSW-J2G are lip seals for rods, designed to contain pressure and scrape contaminants; STR are backup rings mounted behind the main seal to prevent extrusion when pressure is high; ZBR and ZW correspond to sealing assemblies with lip profile and load element; GH and G are simple profile seals for standardized housings; CUT and RGR cover specific sealing applications according to housing geometry. Part numbers with dimension format, such as 45X55X4 or 60X70X7X10, indicate inner diameter, outer diameter, and height or thickness.

Typical applications are hydraulic cylinders for mobile equipment, presses, construction machinery, lifting systems, and industrial automation. In all cases the seal works as a set: the main seal provides sealing and the backup absorbs the mechanical stress, so it is advisable to replace both when servicing the cylinder.
