Wind energy bearings: requirements and applications

Wind energy bearings work under demanding conditions: combined loads, vibrations, temperature changes and exposure to the elements. In wind turbines, bearings are present in the main shaft, the gearbox, the generator and the yaw and pitch systems.

In yaw and pitch systems, slewing rings are critical components. These are large-diameter bearings that allow the nacelle to rotate and the blade angle to be adjusted. They are usually ball or roller bearings with toothed rings, capable of supporting axial, radial loads and tilting moments simultaneously.

In addition to slewing rings, spherical roller bearings are used in the main shaft due to their self-aligning capability and heavy load support. Cylindrical and angular contact bearings also appear in gearboxes and generators. Proper selection directly impacts reliability and maintenance.

Spherical roller bearings for main shafts and gearboxes

Spherical roller bearings are a frequent choice in wind turbine main shafts because they tolerate misalignment and high radial loads. Their double-row roller design with a spherical raceway in the outer ring allows them to absorb shaft deflections without generating additional stresses.

At MR Accesorios Industriales we supply spherical roller bearings from recognized brands such as SKF, FAG and LINK-BELT. Some codes we handle include 22325, 22361, 20222-MB, 20240-MB, 6203U and 22318. Each has specific dimensional and load capacity characteristics.

When requesting a quote, it is key to indicate the full code and brand if an exact replacement is sought. If you do not have the code, you can send us a photo of the part or the main dimensions (inner diameter, outer diameter and width) and we will help you identify the appropriate alternative.

Cylindrical rollers in gearboxes and generators

Cylindrical rollers are used in wind gearboxes and generators due to their high radial load capacity and suitability for high speeds. They support heavy loads and allow compact designs, which is valuable in the nacelle.

In this category we work with codes such as N3055, RNU 305, SL182226, SL183018, 6217 and 5326. The FAG SL series, for example, includes single-row cylindrical rollers with sheet steel or solid cages, suitable for applications with high radial loads.

For maintenance, it is important to check internal clearance and lubrication. A poorly lubricated cylindrical bearing or one with inadequate clearance can fail prematurely. That is why we also offer greases and mounting tools for complete service.

Angular contact for combined loads in pitch systems

Angular contact bearings support combined radial and axial loads, making them suitable for blade pitch systems and other points where forces act in various directions. They are mounted in pairs or sets to achieve rigidity and precision.

We supply codes such as 7417, 7453, 3314, 3315, 7310 B and 7211 B. The B designation indicates a 40° contact angle, common in high axial load applications. These bearings require careful preload adjustment according to manufacturer specifications.

In wind turbines, angular contact bearings can be found in the blade pitch mechanism, where they must withstand fluctuating loads and oscillating movements. Correct selection reduces wear and extends maintenance intervals.

SNL split housings for wind transmission shafts

SNL split housings (also called split plummer blocks) are used to mount bearings on transmission shafts, such as those of the gearbox or generator. Their split design facilitates assembly and disassembly without having to dismantle the entire shaft.

We work with SKF SNL housings, such as codes SNL 211 and SNL 216. These housings are combined with insert bearings or bearings with adapter sleeves. They are robust and allow simple alignment in the field.

In wind applications, SNL housings are usually mounted on rigid bases and with adequate lubrication systems. When requesting a quote, it is important to indicate the housing number and the associated bearing to ensure dimensional compatibility.

Lubrication and maintenance tools for wind turbines

Lubrication is critical in wind bearings, especially in slewing rings and pitch bearings, which work with slow movements and high loads. Greases for these applications must have extreme pressure additives and resistance to water and corrosion.

We supply greases and lubricants suitable for wind bearings, as well as mounting and maintenance tools: induction heaters, pullers, impact wrenches and clearance gauges. Correct mounting prevents premature damage and reduces unplanned downtime.

When planning maintenance, consider the lubrication schedule recommended by the bearing manufacturer and the environmental conditions of the wind farm. We can advise you on the appropriate grease for your application and the necessary tools.

Frequently asked questions

What bearings are used in wind turbines?

Spherical roller, cylindrical, angular contact bearings and slewing rings are used, depending on the location: main shaft, gearbox, generator, yaw system or blade pitch.

What is a slewing ring in wind energy?

It is a large-diameter bearing that allows the nacelle to rotate (yaw system) or the blade angle to be adjusted (pitch system). It supports axial, radial loads and tilting moments.

How do I identify a bearing for replacement?

Look for the code engraved on the ring or on the box. If it is not visible, measure inner diameter, outer diameter and width, and send us a photo. With that we help you identify the alternative.

What lubrication do wind bearings need?

They require greases with extreme pressure additives, resistant to water and corrosion. The selection depends on speed, load and operating temperature.

Do you ship nationwide?

Yes, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, we coordinate shipments nationwide. Get a quote via WhatsApp or email with the bearing code or size.
